GENERALLY alternator regulators regulate voltage only, NOT current, (as opposed to DC generator charging systems) so it's likely IF the alternators are the same make/style/hookup you can swap the alternators without needed to change the regulator.
Of course, if doing that lets all the smoke out of the electrical system I disclaim ANY responsibility and you'll need to order one of these kits:
