I'm not going to pretend to know all Indians (dot-on-head type, not those holding tomahawks), but . . . those that I do know tend take education very seriously and the entire family is usually involved, one way or another. They don't tend to just send their kids off to pubic school and let the "experts" handle it all.
The Indian girl that won the spelling contest in 2010 (Anamika Veeramani) goes to an all-girls Catholic School, not public school. I put alternative schools, e.g. Catholic schools up in the same categories as those that get home schooled. It often indicates the parents are directly involved and interested.
The Indian girl that won in 2009 (Kavya Shivashankar) not only goes to public school, she is also schooled by her father at least one hour a day, along with her musical training, Indian dance training, etc. Again, a kid that has parents directly involved and not letting the public school system raise their kid. So yes, she is home schooled and public schooled.
