Good morning Ray! I think this is the first time I have posted on TT in many a year. In Michigan, in MOST cases, a small claims action goes to a mediator and only goes to the judge if they are not busy or if the mediation is unproductive. A default judgement is issued if one party does not show. Collections are up to the plaintiff. You have to wait about a month and then you can do a creditors exam in court and question the defendant about their assets. If you can find wages, self employment income, bank accounts, etc you can get a writ from the court to seize accounts or garnish income. Other assets may or may not be restricted by law on small claims and the court clerk can tell you what you can or cannot file against. A persistant deadbeat can have a bench warrant issued against him if he does not show for an exam. I have to do a lot of small claims collections in my business.
