A friend just gave me a Case 646 that was in serious need of some TLC. I've been slowly bringing it back to health and have it running pretty reliably. I've noticed that going downhill I hear a grinding noise and the driveline gives almost no engine braking. The tractor pulls well enough and the loader arms work fine. The brakes also work, but I've driven other hydrostatic systems and the amount of engine braking is pronounced. Does anyone have familiarity with this tractor's drivetrain, and is engine braking something that it's supposed to do?
