I have always liked cats, when our children were young they wanted pets and we got a pair of cats. One lived to be about 14 and he had a stroke and had to be put down, but Jake lived to be 23 years old,I believe he developed diabetes and he kept losing weight until there was nothing left of him, but there was no suffering. His age (23) was phenominal but other folks have told me they know of cats that lived that long. Its still an upset to lose a pet that has been around your home for those many years.
