Sold a 2001 Impala to a friend.. It does wacky and goofy things sometimes, but not always
Dad has a 99 Grand Am.. hits between 1/2 and 1/4 a tank and it'll go haywire EVERY TIME
Dad's 04 and my 05 pickups have the ever famous GM "floating" gas gauge.. You know, the one that will "bob" around sitting in the driveway idling while ya run the defroster, or stopped at a red light, pretty much whenever.. Again, not every time, but frequent.
GM has a gas gauge problem I'd say LOL.. Best I can advise would be to fill up and reset your trip-odometer, if you have a idea how far a full tank will take you, and refill accordingly.
I'll also say the battery connections/charge level is worth checking into as well.. About 3 months ago, I put a new battery into my pickup, and seemed like ever since the truck's gauges, lights, radio, and even the way it'd idle and run seemed weird now and then. Thursday, I stopped and ate lunch, then visited with a friend.. went to leave.. truck would not start.. I checked things out.. battery cable "bolts" were TIGHT.. but could still spin the cable around (side post).. I came to the conclusion that the bolts were bottoming out in the battery post and not tightening the terminals down tight.. Took a grinder to the bolts when I got home, ground about 1/8th of a inch off and haven't had a odd occurrence since.. Now it'll even idle without stalling.. was told that the bad connection would cause a weak voltage and would make things go funny.
