I have a Case 646 with a 16 hp Onan. The stator windings shorted to ground so I replaced them. The engine ran fine as long as the charging circuit was disconnected. The cowlings and flywheel had to be removed to access the stator. Everything went well with the repair and the system charges as it's supposed to, but now the engine will not idle properly.
The motor starts fine, but idles almost to the point of dying, then the govenor revs it, and the cycle continues. We removed the air cleaner to access things, but changed nothing else on the carb. The plug wires were removed to take off the cowlings, but none of the tune-up settings were altered.
The linkages for the govenor were attached to the front engine cowl and those had to be disconnected, so I'm thinking the problem may be there. Anyone out there have any suggestions as to how to fix this?
