First, get your terminology straight... depressing the clutch pedal is called "DISengaging the clutch".
Releasing the clutch pedal is called "ENgaging the clutch".
Most likely reasons for the lift to drop quickly when the clutch is disengaged are leaking piston rings on the lift cylinder or a leaking high pressure relief valve.
There are other possibilities, as well.
