Cat could meet the standards but decided at this time to use resources developing the off-road stuff which is really their "meat and potatoes". Good chance Cat will be back after the dust settles. One major consideration was Cummins played the game better and banked significant emissions credits, which allowed them to produce/sell engines that didn't meet the new standards. Cat didn't and would be selling more expensive, complicated and likely less fuel efficient engines. Which engine do you think a trucker would buy? Eventually Cummins will use up the credits and be required to sell an engine that meets the standards. At that time expect Cat to reevaluate the market and make a decision whether or not to reenter.
