Blocking sugar-beets is similar to "chopping" cotton, if two sugar-beet plants are too close, they will NOT develop properly, so one has to go!
Hoeing sugar-beets comes later when the weeds begin to grow!
That is also similar to "thinning" apples on the trees. When the apples are developing in the early stages, if two are touching, one is removed, so when you go to pick/harvest the apples, you have a much better quality apple!
