We had two loggers get arrested, and convicted for wood theft here. I caught them red-handed. Took two years to go to court. They got found guilty with a "slap on the wrist" and something like a $50 per tree fine - which is rediculous.
NY legislators are now working on upping fines for wood-theft. If you only get fined $50 for stealing a tree that might be worth $200-$400, seems for many, it's well worth taking the chance. I'll add that to some people a grown tree has more value then just what the mill pays.
In regard to these NY firewood transport forms - it looks like I have to fill out a separate form for every load of wood. If I spend a day trucking wood back and forth, seems each load has to be declared?
It seems to me this state is more interested in making new laws instead of enforcing the ones we already have. I do agree though, with attempts to stop pests in wood from getting spread. But, it's going to happen anyway. Laws will only slow it down a little.
