I'm not at all familar with the set up on an Explorer but the first place to start is dropping the oil pan. If that can be done without pulling the engine is a question for someone that's done it or a Chilton's manual.
If the pickup screen is plugged you might get away with cleaning it and filling it back up with oil and running it - but I'd be checking the oil with every trip even if its seems like its running OK. Either way the engine has been damaged - its just a question as to how much damage its suffered.
Previous to the pickup screen becoming completely clogged you know it had to be partially blocked and the engine running with low oil pressure in that situation did help it any either.
