Here in Johnstown/ Gloversville NY. Deer and other hides are transported here from the region and bought on a daily basis, Deer hides especially this time of year. Gloversville got it's name in the late 1700s and was the Hide capital of the US.. Like all other basic industries, of the Eastern US the industry has left the country, but there is still a micro industry of tanners and leather finising co. still surviving in this area. Far smaller than back in the 1920s when this industry was in its hay day. Then the Adiroundacks had a wealth of fur bearing animals, plus vast hemlock forests to provide the chemical catilist to tan hides and also provide the building materials to construct the tanning and finishing mills. In spite of this present Micro leather industry, it's just another example of the migration of basic US industry to Asian Countries. Sad to say the least!
