Battery if low or dead may have froze. Freezing will buckle or shift plates or internal intercell connections. A battery will explode just as readily from an internal spark as it will from an external spark. If lead acid batteries were to be introduced into the market today. They would be rapidly banned due to personal and environmental health and safety concerns. Lawsuits would be flying too.
