Your amp gauge goes in a series connection from the alt to the battery.
Follow the big wire from the alt to where ever it goes I E could go to the positive post on the starter or starter solenoid or to the pos post on the battery.
You need to split this wire and put your amp gauge in the middle. You can just unhook from the starter or solenoid or battery and hook the loose end to the + side and then make a new wire from the - side back to the stater, solenoid, or battery.
You will need probably a 60 amp meter to handle the current from an alternator.
