You do not have to get it, but if you do not have a current WC policy you are NOT coming on my property! Landowner would have to be nuts to let a "contractor" on his place without the coverage as then the cost can slide to the landowner!
An old employer did not check well enough and ended up paying $85,000 for an injury to a contractor's employee. The contractor did not have coverage or assets.
