Pull you a wire straight from the battery back to the battery on the trailer and as you said make it where it's connected through the trailers connector. Depending on the light setup ou'll probably need more than the 4 pin connector though because you'll need the running lights, brakes and signal lights, along with the hot wire from the battery and a dedicated ground from the trailer to the vehicle. Many people rely on the metal to metal contact of the hitch and it often works like that but it's just not dependable. So if your wanting to be able to rely on the battery you'll need that definate ground. I did basically the same thing for my trailer excedpt I ran a 2/0 sized cable to the back from the trucks battery and used one of the high amp, two pole connectors like they use on electric forklift batteries, etc as the connection. It's been used like that numerous times over the past year with no problems, and the rear battery stays charged enough that it doesn't have to be hooked up every time just to do a small pull.
