I would check around for a co-op electric/gas company if there is one in your area. I"m in mid-michigan. I pre-bought for 1.79/gal last summer, went through my limit yesterday and paid 1.99/gal for the overage (which is their standard rate for everyone without a contract this year). They own the tank. Most companies have a tendancy to get you in with a lower rate, then hit you hard during the winter when you need it the most. The 2.79 you were charged is excessive, but it happens all the time and there is very little you can do about it.
