We have had both Explorer and Escape as wife"s vehicle and very happy with both. "92 Explorer had over 200,000 miles when we got rid of it, "95 Explorer (which had a snowplow when we bought it) had 180,000 miles with no major problems. Both had 4.0 engine and got 18-20 mpg short trip average. She now drives a 2005 Escape with 3.0 that gets around 22 mpg. All are good on snow and ice. Escape with all wheel drive is smoother to drive on snow as the older Explorers with auto 4x4 took hold after spinning began. Don"t know about newer Explorers.
