Changing fan belts on Farmall A

I have a 1944 Farmall "A" that I just bought and I need to change the fan belts. I see how to adjust the belt tension. I took the fan nut off and tried to bring the fan forward enough to put on the new belt, but the fan hits the radiator before the stud clears the adjustment slot. Do I have to take off the radiator or where the radiator goes into the top of the engine? Thanks for the help.
