The open station MF 398 is a good reliable tractor. The cab MF 398 was a night mare with poor wiring and switches. There was a real active local MF dealer that retired 6-7 years ago. So there are several of the MF 398 around me here with no close dealer. So I am asked to work on a few. I have replaced two clutches on the open station tractors, both where loader tractors so that is not unusual. Had one MF 398 cab tractor that had a cab fire. That thing just about caused me to be come a pagan. LOL It sure made me lose my religion a few times. Another had a wiring melt down and I turned down working on it.
Use some common sense in what you pull with it and you will get allot of use out of one. One guy here tried to pull to large of a disk, I think a 18 footer, and he tore up the rear end. These where designed as a utility tractor. Use them that way and they hold up well. Try to do heavy field tillage and you had better have your implements matched to the tractor or you will pay the price for it. Just as with most other brands too.
