BEFORE you wire up that (I assume neg ground) alternator
1) Connect battery with its Negative to frame ground and Positive cable wherever it used to go (starter switch or solenoid etc), its just that now its on the + battery post instead.
2) If it has an ammeter, its leads need swapped side to side, or else it will register just bass ackwards.
3) If its a battery powered coil distributor igition instead of a Magneto, the coil leads need swapped so + now wires to the ignition switch and - wires to the distributor. If its a Magneto no change is required, it dont use battery power
4) The starter will still turn the same direction no change required
You dont state what alternator or ask for help wiring it so no response to that nor did you ask any 6 to 12 volt conversion questions.
