Saw that sight several years ago from my office window when the piggybacked shuttle made a stopover at Barksdale on a California/Florida run. It passed right over a giant American flag on our bank tower...if I'd only had a camera.
A more unforgettable sight though was a few years ago when the shuttle made a rare night return from orbit. It crossed west to east south of my house. It streaked the sky with a bright orange plume, like a giant contrail, except I knew there was no engine involved. I learned later that it was a "plasma" trail. Still don't understand that.
The shuttle came across my night sky at about a 30 degree angle, just above the tree tops. Looked like it was just a few miles away. Later learned it was 600 miles off the Louisiana coast over the Gulf of Mexico. Newsman reported ten minutes later that it had landed in Florida. It was truckin'.
