If you can find a copy, read "They Call Me Mister 500", an autobiography by Andy Granitelli.
It's a good inside glimpse of how Indy racing used to be, and still should be. The Granitelli brothers actually once DROVE an Indy race car from Chicago down to Indianapolis.
It's also entertaining as heck.
Before they got onto Indy racing, the Granitelli brothers owned a speed shop in Chicago, and promoted stock car races around the area.
One time they paid a driver to pile up an old stock car in front of the stands. The driver had a white coveralls on, and a bottle of ketchup in the car. He dumped the ketchup all over himself for effect. The ambulance crew made a big production out of getting the driver out of the car and loaded into the ambulance. They had a dummie strapped to an identical stretcher in the ambulance, also in white coveralls with ketchup poured all over it.
The ambulance took off down the track with the back doors flopping open. When the crowd started to yell, the ambulance crew kicked the dummy on the stretcher out of the back door. The crow was really yelling by then, so the ambulance driver stopped, backed up, and backed over the dummy on the stretcher.
They had to send the rescue crew up into the stands 'cause 7 people fainted.
That's just one of many incidents Andy relates in his book.
