In this day and age, you need at least one real credit card. In other words, a Visa card, and not a debit card. Very few major car rental agencies will rent to someone with no credit card, at least not without a substantial cash deposit. Plus, doing business over the internet using a debit card is not particularly wise, since debit cards don't offer the same level of consumer fraud protection as do credit cards. Lending agencies tend to look askance at anyone who's old enough to drink but doesn't hold a credit card.
First, you should pull your credit report from all three agencies. Or at least one. You can get one report a year from each agency by going through annualcreditreport.com. Do NOT go to "freecreditreport.com" or other similar-sounding sites; they are all scams. The report will show your various accounts and credit history. Although you won't get your credit score (aka "FICO score"), you can pay a small fee and get it as well.
Since you had credit denied, you're enitled to a copy of your credit report anyway, but it's probably simpler just to go to annualcreditreport.com. At any rate, review your report for any errors, and start working on getting them fixed.
Now write a letter to your bank president, or go down there in person, and ask why you were denied. Given that the card was to be issued by a third party, they may not even be aware of your rejection. Don't let them off easy; point out your history with them and list out all your past and present loans with them. If you have a long history, there is no reason they shouldn't issue you a card.
The first card is always the hardest. After that, the offers come streaming in.
