Get the replacement cap IH offers for free!!!!! I think it is for the gas tractors clear back to the 300. I know it is for the 06 and 56 series and newer.
We had a man burnt bad on a IH gas tractor because of the gas cap. He was using the tractor and filled the tank full to the brim with gas out of an under ground tank. Then he went and used the tractor hard. The fuel heated up, expanded and forced out over the sides of the tank. It caught fire and covered him in burning gas. He has bad burns over a large part of his body. There where cases all over the country of that happening. IH got sued and came out with the Free replacement cap. I don't remember what was different about it other than it was taller than the original cap.
So I would get that replacement cap and also never fill any gas tractor clear to the very top there needs to be a little air space above the gas for expansion.
As far as losing the gas cap. I have not lost one in years but have lost them when I was younger. I guess hurrying to do things makes one not check things out as close.
