If you don't mind going low and slow, Light Sport aircraft are an economical option. On the other hand, there are some very fast experimental (homebuilt) aircraft that will blow the doors off most factory-built planes yet are relatively cheap to operate. The used amateur-built aircraft market is full of nice planes you can buy for less than it would cost to build from scratch.
You won't get an instructor to take you up for free, but most flight schools offer an introductory half-hour lesson for about what it costs them in fuel. And it counts against your dual instruction requirement.
