I used to work on some of the BIG High Desert ranches in Eastern Oregon when I was younger. Saddle a horse at 5:00 am and lucky to be back to the trailer by 5:00 pm. In the saddle all day out in those big pastures gathering cattle. Probly ride 70 miles or more all said and done. Those horses got all the grubby ol' meadow hay they wanted. And all looked/worked really good. Fast forward a few years, I end up with a girlfriend who rides Barrel Racing horses. Somehow her nags who "worked" for 17 seconds at a time needed nothing but the top quality hay. She didn't understand my argument that they'd do just fine on plain ol' first cutting grass hay.
