i am guilty as charged. I have done that it only as a last resort. Here is a good story...
I was riding atv's and came upon a large group of riders. About 45-50 of them. They ask if in wanted to tag along. I knew a few of them so I said sure. In the first half mile they stopped 4 times to drink (beer, shine and liquor). Well one of the razors punctured a tire with a rock and then continues to drive till the bead of the tire comes off the rim. They plug the tire with a fist full of plugs and try to air it up with a 12volt compressor.
I tell them if they will pour some beer around the bead and rim it will lube those and allow the tire to slide onto the rim easier. (Now I have worked with my dad in the tire shop for 25 plus years and we always used bead lube or in an emergency at hone murphys oil soap). The guy working on the tire yells to me "I guess you are a f'in tire expert". Then then tells everyone beer is not to be wasted and he can fix it with ether. He sprays a lot of ether in this tire. About half a can. I get off my atv and move way back and to the side. Some young kid (14-15 or so) notices what I am doing and moves to the side with me.
The tire expert lights the ether and we all watch the tire inflate and then blow the side wall out. It was just too funny for words. At least no one was injured. He was loaned a spare and at the next fork in the trail I split ways with that crowd. Don't know,if everyone made it that day or not but I was not going to be associated with then if things went bad.
