the cranking compression will equal the compression ratio times the atmospheric pressure only if the intake valve closes exactly on BDC. if the intake valve closes before, or more commanly, after BDC then the cranking compression will be less. if i would have to guess i would say take your compression ratio*atmospheric pressure*.85 for a more accurate approxmatin of what it should be new. as far as determining engine wear a leak-down test would be better than the cranking compression test.
