8N is 4 speed. 9N and 2N are 3 speed. To determin if a 9N look at the dog legs on side of hood, the 9N has no bolts in there, hidden fasteners under hood, the 2N will have one 7/17" bolt in each dog leg to hold hood. Also all 9N will have anI bean type of wishbone, most 2N will have a tublar oval type of wishbone but a few ferly 2N I understand had that I beam type. Either way any of the 9,2,8N tractors can have the later cast ,090 thick wall sleves installed that the later 8N had to start with but those can be installed in any block by boring the cylinders out as the earlier engines had a .045 sleve. But the same piston and rings and gaskets fit fit all except the side mount distributoe takes different gaskets at distributor. Valves same in all 9,2,8N engines and no stamping where it is supposed to be means the block was replaced at some time with a new one and serial was not stamped in new one as was supposed to have been done and they were just hand stamped in when new and the person supposed to being the one doing it if he had a light stroke with a hammer might not have even made a mark when he was stamping but somebody with a heavy hammer stroke the number will be deeper and easily read. Anouther difference between a 2N and the 9N will be easy to see as the fender bolts can be seen exposed in rear axle casting while the 9N they are hidden. And indreustal engines like used on the combine can have been put into any of the 3 N serie tractors.
