I think you've got the right idea with diesel, but are looking at the wrong rig for towing a tractor. The first generation of Chevy Diesels were re-worked gas engines. Their general reputation is well, less than sterling. They didn't sell many and the are available real cheap on the used market for good reason. Personally, I's spend a few extra dollars and look for an older Dodge Cummins or one of the non-Powerstroke Fords. The early Dodges were pretty 'rough' in fit and finish, but that Cummins engine is a good one. The Ford's of the same vintage were better built and the IH diesel in them enjoys a pretty good reputation. Both those rigs should be available out on the market for reasonable prices.
