Here are my impressions of the "unnecessary" parts you describe, and this is just my opinion. Brake pedal latch - a good safety feature. It should be used whenever you're operating the tractor at high speeds - just like it says in the manual. It's easy to make sure you hit both pedals when you're in complete control of the tractor, but in an emergency situation, it's not hard to only hit one brake pedal, which can result in an upset tractor, injury or even death -my best friend was killed in a similar situation. Differential lock - Steve hit the nail on the head, applying a brake to a fast spinning tire is a good way to brake parts, not to mention that fact that you'll never be able to modulate the brakes to control slippage as well as the diff lock can. The diff lock also makes the tractor more efficient when used in low traction situations. The bumper _ I don't know - haven't seen many tractors with bumpers. Vinyl seat - Steve called that one well, also. Foot throttle - very handy in situations where minute speed changes are needed. Case in point - we use a JD 8450 on our grain cart. When unloading a combine on the go, I throttle the hand throttle clear back and use the foot throttle to match the varying speeds of the combine, which is much easier than using the hand throttle. It also allows me to focus my full attention on the unloading auger.

What’s even more amazing is that all the principals of hydraulic theory can be wrapped up in such a small package. This same package applies to any hydraulic system from the largest bulldozer to the oldest and smallest tractor. This short series will take a look at the basic layout of a simple hydraul
