The 8 volt battery was a comon fix for the M. The battery should charge with out doing anything but you may have to adj the regulator.

I wouldn't charge it with a 12 v charger you need to find one with a 8v setting. Some of the high end comercial units still come with this setting.

8V or even 12v will not shorten your starter life. The starter is dammaged by excessive cranking that overheats the starter. A 6v that has trouble starting the engine because of slow cranking speed could damage the starter faster. 8v or 12v will improve starting and even reduce cranking time.
