I'm trying to remember, and if my memory serves me right....the light is hooked to the wire going to the terminal on the alt. that "excites" or feeds it a little current to get it started. This is on a Delco with an internal regulator. With the switch on and the motor not running, its feeding current to the terminal (which is grounded at that point) and the light will light, then when the engine starts and is running and it begins to generate electricity, the regulator changes that terminal to + and your light will go out (check it with your test light---both will be "hot" or + at that point). The whole purpose of the light is so that you don't continue to feed power to the alternator and not be able to shut the engine off. You could buy a diode to do the same thing. I hope this is of some help, I'm no expert on this, its by trail and error that I know...
