positive or neg. ground?

Restoring a 48 model C farmall. It's been converted to 12 volts but when I went to put a new battery on it I noticed the cables wanted to fit the battery all wrong. These were the cables that were on the tractor when I got it but the battery was gone. Did this tractor use a positive ground?
I'm not trying to start it at this time, just flushing the engine out with diesel so I swapped the battery around and tried it both ways. It turns in the right direction whichever way the battery is hooked up.
