If your not replacing the sleeve and don't have
the ridge remover there is an old trick mechanics
use to do. Hone the cylinder walls as usual and
install all the rings on the piston except the
top ring. Take the top ring and lightly chamfer
or bevel the upper edge where it would come up
and hit the ridge. It takes very little effort
to remove material with a file. Just touching
it lightly will do the job and stop any piston
knock on the ridge. It's not really the correct
way of doing the job, but it works. I've done it
and I knew oldtimers that would never take out
the ridge when reringing an engine. Those engines
ran forever using this trick. It goes without
saying that the cyls. should be checked for wear
and taper to be sure that rings are the only
repair indicated.
