speed regulation on old fasioned windmills

does anyone know how the old windmills acomplished the governing on them to keep them from overspeeding in high winds, was there some sorta brake mechanism on the main shaft or did they have the tail turn outa the way in high winds? i have found some parts drawings of windmill gearboxes on the net but nothing that showed how the speed was controled.
