6 to 12 volt on M -Farmall ?

Put a 12 volt battery in my old M Farmall - left the generator wire off ( 6 volt) but noticed output of generator is 15 volts to 30 volts -low to high RPM (using DC voltage meter-no load) can the old generator be used to charge this battery some way? Its a Delco but does not have a voltage output listed on it. Maybe change to a 12 volt regulator or remove voltage regulator and use a diode.If I should have to use a GM one wire alterintor will it work on a + ground battery ?Will it fit under the hood?
