Your transmission won't cause that trouble. Sounds like clutch disk drag, or your pilot bushing causing excess friction. When you put the clutch disk in, did you make sure it slides freely on the splines and that the pressure plate fingers are all even? The trans. in that tractor is same as was used in the Crosley cars, I believe.
