Smoke:

Black: Raw diesel fuel Usually caused by too rich a pump setting; putting more in the cylinder than can effectively explode; dirty injector not misting fuel so that it can be burned readily.

Blue: Engine oil burning; bad rings

White: Condensation/water Cold engine

Take it out and run it awhile and get it hot. You said that you already started it; don't know why you are getting these starting problem responses.

If the diesel had water in it from sitting, your fuel filters are designed to remove and hold that.

I'd change them as soon as you can as you never know what's in there. Additionally, if it has been sitting, the fuel tank could have some accumulated rust in it which will eventually show up in the filters. If you have to change them a couple of times don't be alarmed.

Symptoms of clogged filter are poor high end response; cutting out; loss of power; but idles ok.
