Does your car have the 4 cylinder or 5 cylinder engine? The 4 cylinder is not an interference engine. If the belt breaks the valves will not hit the pistons. I do speak from experience--my 86 turbo Volvo did break the belt and the only problem was the broken belt. The 5 cylinder--I don't know for sure; But I'd bet its non interference also. Remembr Volvo was very conservative before Ford bought them. Putting a new belt on isn't hard. In fact the dealership will take about 1 hour and charge about $100. You can do it in about 2--the first time. Reseting the light should be explained in the shop manual. Although I will agree the manuals do not come up tp US standards.
