making a hydraulic valve spool

i was just wondering if anyone has ever made a replacement hydraulic valve spool, i have a hydreco valve bank for our loader backhoe that has a broken spool, its an odd diameter (55/64") and parts are no longer available, neither is hard chromed rod in this size, so i have been considering making one outa stainless steel and lapping it with a brass od lap to get it to the exact size, i know that stainless will be a little harder on seals over time but what i plan to do is swap one of the spools from the two that are used for the stabilizers so that the stainless spool will be on the stabilizer circuit where it doesnt get used as often as the other backhoe funtions. i just wondered if anyone has ever done this sorta thing before. i am a machinist by trade but dont have access to an od grinder so it would be basicly just carefully turned and lapped to size. any thoughts would be apprecited, basicly all i have to lose is my time in making it but just wondered how crazy of an idea this might be lol.
