This is probably NOT the answer to your question, but may shed a little light. I have a B&S 8hp vertical shaft on a tow behind mower. From the factory, the rubber fuel line ran right over the muffler - factory had added a metal tubing sheath over that part of fuel line. Before I ran it the first time, I found a way to provide some separation between muffler and fuel line, by plastic wire tieing it away from muffler. That seemed to be courting disaster. I would check very carefully the routing of fuel line. Have you tried running it with a remotely located fuel tank?
