When I first read your problem, I immediately thought of vapor lock with the gas line too close to the head. Ron and Rays thoughts seem right in line with how you are describing the problem. Had a church bus one time vapor locking, got it all the way from Lexington KY, to Mich with some tin foil wrap that we built a little shield out of. My buddies always joke about an engine only needing three things to run... Spark, fuel, compression. Sounds easy, getting all three at exactly the right time, thats the hard part. Good luck, Rick
