JD water pump

Can't get any help with this off of the JD forum. I'm trying to rebuild a water pump off of a 2640 Diesel. I cannot get the pulley off. I've tried a very large press. I think the part of the problem is that the pump is hard to postition in the press supporting the pulley with a bearing splitter, and I may not be pushing on the shaft square. A long time ago, I saw someone rattle one of these apart with an air hammer, but I don't remember how. If I support the pulley and hit the shaft with the air hammer, will it come apart?
