OT 95 Ford 6 cyl mileage

I have two 95 Ford pickups I borrow regularly to tow things with..Problem is both have the same check engine light problem that is supposed to be bad EGR valves. One gets less than ten MPG, and the other isn't much better. The valve alone is supposed to be $200 plus...
Does anyone know what these things get for mileage when they are running properly? And will there be anything else I need to look for on the fuel mileage issue besides the EGR? (Yes, there aren't any rust issues on tanks or fuel lines.)
