I can"t remember for sure exactly when they changed to that "smart" flasher, but it was sometime during that era.

But just for the sake of argument, let"s say it does take the old 552 flasher.

GM designed that thing to "stay on solid" when something is wrong to alert you to the problem. What I mean is, if just one bulb is bad, the thing won"t flash; it will just come on and stay on.

The way I get around this is to use the heavier 4-way flasher in the turn signal socket as well. This heavy-duty flasher will flash, no matter if some of the bulbs are burnt out or not.

Also, like the other fellas have said, that car is fourteen years old and maybe that switch isn"t making contact anymore.

But, if the problem is in the switch, you should be able to "wiggle" it enough to make it work, at least intermittently, to locate the source of your trouble.
