john deere mt spark jump

I am finishing up the refurbishment of a 1950 mt. She runs beautifully! Idles down around 70-80 rpm's, accelerates flawlessly, doesn't overheat with the fan belt off, starts 1 revolution of the hand crank!

problem-- To achieve this i have to pull the plug wires nearly off, leaving about a 3/8 gap between the wire conductor and the end of the plug. I have tried numerous timing settings, where it is must be right, no kick back, etc. i have converted to a 12 volt negative ground, and am using a new 12 volt coil. The plugs are new champions, i've tried the old ones too!

Could it be the condensor? or?????
