Making the spark jump a gap will increase the intencity of the spark. If it runs good with the wires pulled back some you may have the wrong heat range plugs. Maybe try going one heat range hotter. I had a tired old JD "B" that I ran with spark jumpers on all the time. All you have to do is cut the plug wire and slip each end into a short piece of tygon (plastic) tubing so the ends are about a 1/4" apart. Worked for me. Not pretty but functional.
